San Francisco-based Oppenheimer Acceleration, a defense-focused fund established by Silicon Valley veteran Network.VC, is making waves with its inaugural accelerator program. The fund has announced investments in two promising startups: California-based Sierra Turbines and Ukrainian PanoptesAI. Both companies are poised to receive $125,000 in funding, fueling their development of cutting-edge defense technologies.

The investment is structured in two phases: $25,000 upfront to prepare for the accelerator program, which kicks off in March, followed by a further $100,000 injection during the program itself. This is part of Oppenheimer Acceleration’s plan to invest a total of $2 million in the startups of its first acceleration program cohort.
Sierra Turbines: Powering the Future of Flight
Sierra Turbines has developed a microturbine platform with applications for UAS and loitering munition thrust applications. “They have a strategic first customer with a VTOL airframe featuring 1 or 2 turbine engines for counter-UAS and are seeking investment to start production,” says Oleksandr Soroka, co-founder of Oppenheimer Acceleration. Their dual-use platform can be produced at mass scale, offering a solution to the global shortage of microturbines.
PanoptesAI: An AI-Powered Eye in the Sky
Ukrainian startup PanoptesAI is building a sophisticated AI-powered system that creates a mesh network of stationary, mobile, and aerial optical-electronic stations, along with radio-electronic intelligence modules. “Using artificial intelligence, it identifies, tracks, and predicts the flight paths of objects,” explains Soroka. This provides real-time, continuous monitoring and access to airspace data, enhancing situational awareness and threat detection capabilities.
A Growing Market for Defense Tech
The investment comes at a time of significant growth in the defense tech sector. A recent study by KSE Institute and Brave1, a Ukrainian military technology development cluster, highlighted that Ukrainian defense startups raised up to $5 million in 2023. This figure is projected to soar to $50 million in 2024, demonstrating the increasing demand for innovative defense solutions. Oppenheimer Acceleration, with its focus on early-stage companies, is strategically positioned to capitalize on this burgeoning market.
