The second issue of SALIUT Magazine — a visual journey into the Ukrainian 90’s. Osnovy Publishing together with Depositphotos presented the second issue of the Ukrainian photography magazine SALIUT.
In this issue we explore the 90s: its aesthetics and people.
Issue 02 is divided into two parts.
- The first part looks at the political realities of the Ukrainian 90s through projects by Roman Pyatkovka, Yuri Kosin and Valeriy Miloserdov, while Oleksandr Lyapin talks about the changing cultural tastes and kitsch as a cultural code, as well as photography at the forefront of contemporary art. Individuals and their place in society took on a special meaning in the 90s. The projects of Rita Ostrovska, Sergey Bratkov, Mykola Trokh and Arsen Savadov thematically cover various sectors of society: from Jewish immigrants to homeless children. We also feature an interview with Alexander Chekmenev about his iconic series “Passport”.
- The second part considers the impact of the 90’s on today’s aesthetics and realities. We compare different views on the period through the works of those who grew up and came of age in the 90’s. Projects by Yevgen Nikiforov, Julie Poly, Valentine Bo, and Viacheslav Polyakov look at the realities of what is now the most legendary decade in modern Ukrainian history. The second part also includes a special project from Roman Mikhaylov and Depositphotos. Using materials provided by Depositphotos, the photographer created a series of collages that capture the 90’s spirit — with all its tensions, uncertainties, hardships and dangers. The project acknowledges that many people seem to live in the 90s still, and the realities of that era, in certain ways, remain relevant to this day.
