In a significant boost for next-generation defense technology, European defense investment fund Darkstar has strategically injected €600,000 into Deftak, a dynamic Ukrainian-Estonian startup spearheading the development of revolutionary drone munitions. This move not only highlights Darkstar’s commitment to nurturing Europe’s underfunded defense tech landscape but also signals a pivotal advancement in asymmetric warfare capabilities.

Deftak is rapidly carving a niche with its innovative armament solution, designed for seamless integration across diverse unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platforms. The core brilliance of their technology lies in its ability to transform standard reconnaissance drones into high-precision strike assets, even in the most challenging electronic warfare (EW) environments where GPS signals are denied or heavily contested. This battle-tested system boasts a remarkable cost efficiency, coming in at up to 10 times cheaper than traditional guided munitions, democratizing access to advanced strike capabilities.
The fresh capital infusion is earmarked to catapult Deftak into its next growth phase, enabling the startup to scale production significantly. This will directly enhance the operational capabilities of Ukrainian defense forces and, by extension, strengthen the technological edge for NATO allies.
Ragnar Sass, Co-founder of Darkstar, lauded Deftak’s agility and impact: “Deftak stands out as one of the most audacious and effective teams I’ve encountered. The realities of electronic warfare in Ukraine are a rapidly shifting chessboard, with new challenges emerging every three months. Deftak’s team and their product are prime examples of the innovation that can deliver a critical advantage to Ukraine and NATO, both today and in the future”.
This investment marks Darkstar’s second foray into Ukrainian defense startups, following their support for Farsight Vision, reinforcing their mission to back agile teams developing breakthrough solutions with tangible battlefield impact. Darkstar is renowned for its unique approach of bridging Ukrainian and European defense startups with the invaluable insights of Ukrainian military personnel on the front lines. Their intensive five-day bootcamps in Ukraine, with potential investment pools reaching €1.5 million, facilitate direct collaboration between innovators, military units, European experts, and investors, fostering a crucible for next-level defense technologies. The next such bootcamp is slated for this summer in Ukraine.
Reflecting its rapid expansion, Deftak is actively seeking a talented Operations Manager based in Kyiv (or willing to relocate) to navigate the “organized chaos” of a fast-scaling startup and build robust operational structures.
This strategic partnership between Darkstar and Deftak is more than just a financial transaction; it’s a testament to the power of targeted investment in disruptive technologies that can redefine modern conflict and bolster collective security.
