In a landmark move for Ukraine’s defense-tech sector, Swedish aerospace and defense titan SAAB has officially partnered with Ukraine to jointly produce air defense (AD) systems. The agreement, announced by Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence, is a major victory for the nation’s “Build in Ukraine” initiative.

This strategy is not just about procurement; it’s a fundamental industrial policy designed to embed world-class production directly on Ukrainian soil. The dual objectives are clear: to rapidly equip the Defense Forces with modern weaponry and to integrate Ukraine as a full-fledged partner in the global defense technology market.
A Growing Roster of Global Titans
SAAB is the latest, but not the first, global heavyweight to commit to local production. A powerful trend is emerging as key international partners move their operations inside Ukraine.
Kyiv officials note that over 25 foreign defense companies are already at various stages of localization. The movement includes:
- BAE Systems (UK): Actively producing and servicing L119 howitzers.
- Rheinmetall (Germany): Establishing critical repair and production bases for armored vehicles.
- Northrop Grumman (USA): Finalizing details for the joint manufacturing of essential ammunition.
This influx extends beyond heavy metal. Companies specializing in next-generation warfare—unmanned systems, cyber defense, and counter-drone technologies—are also establishing a presence, strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities while simultaneously creating high-value jobs.
What’s on the Table: SAAB’s High-Tech Arsenal
This partnership is the fulfillment of a strategy SAAB’s CEO articulated last September, stressing the need to “help Ukraine build its own capabilities” through direct partnership with its domestic industry.
While the specific systems for co-production have not yet been named, SAAB’s portfolio offers a glimpse into the cutting-edge technology Ukraine stands to gain. The company’s catalog is a showcase of modern air defense, including:
- RBS 70 NG: A state-of-the-art, portable anti-aircraft missile system (MANPADS).
- MSHORAD: A mobile short-range air defense solution.
- Giraffe Radars: A family of advanced (AMB and 4A) radar systems for surveillance and target acquisition.
Most notably, SAAB recently unveiled the Nimbrix, a new ground-launched missile purpose-built to intercept and destroy small drones. With a 5km range and a high-precision seeker, it’s a direct answer to one of the most pressing threats on the modern battlefield.
This collaboration with SAAB marks a strategic shift—from receiving aid to building a resilient, self-sustaining, and technologically advanced defense industry from the ground up.
