Operational Depth in Jammed Skies: Octava Defence Expands Strike Drone Arsenal with 200-km FLYCAT SL

Across the modern battlespace, electronic warfare has fundamentally broken the economics of precision strikes. Cheap consumer-grade FPV drones fall out of the sky the moment GPS signals are smothered, while conventional cruise and ballistic missiles remain far too scarce and expensive to deploy against dispersed battlefield targets.

Closing this tactical void requires systems that combine low unit costs, high-level EW resistance, and strike ranges that push deep into an adversary’s operational rear.

At the MSPO 2026 international defense exhibition in Kielce, Poland, Ukrainian manufacturer Octava Defence presented its answer: an upgraded version of the FLYCAT loitering munition and its newly developed heavy-strike variant, the FLYCAT SL, engineered to strike operational assets at distances exceeding 200 kilometers.

An Octava Defence representative told Militarnyi that the baseline platform has followed an accelerated field-testing cycle. The initial FLYCAT variant entered active combat deployment in March 2026. Informed by front-line feedback, an upgraded platform deployed to active sectors between July and August 2026 and is currently undergoing formal military codification. The extended-range FLYCAT SL platform remains in active testing.

From Enterprise IT to Physical Defence

The appearance of platforms like FLYCAT signals a broader structural shift within Ukraine’s defense tech ecosystem: enterprise IT and cybersecurity conglomerates pivoting their industrial capacity directly into defense manufacturing.

Octava Defence originated within the ecosystem of Octava Capital, founded by veteran tech entrepreneur and investor Oleksandr Kardakov. Over the past two decades, Kardakov spearheaded some of Ukraine’s most recognizable IT and enterprise infrastructure brands, including Datagroup, Incom, and Megatrade. While Octava initially built its market leadership in digital protection and enterprise networking, the full-scale invasion prompted a strategic expansion into physical defense assets, critical infrastructure perimeter security, and counter-drone systems.

This enterprise lineage is visible in the architecture of the platforms, where the focus has been placed on proprietary signal resilience, supply chain control, and system integration rather than reliance on imported consumer kits.

Rapid Iteration Under Fire: The Upgraded FLYCAT

The tactical-tier FLYCAT uses an X-wing aerodynamic configuration optimized for stability and control in environments where global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) are entirely jammed or spoofed.

  • Airframe Dimensions: Wingspan of 1,650 mm; length of 1,600 mm.

  • Flight Profile: Operating radius exceeding 80 km; flight endurance of 60 minutes; maximum speed of 150 km/h.

  • Warhead Capacity: Carries a dedicated 2.5 kg to 3.7 kg high-explosive payload.

  • Sensor Suite: Optical homing module integrated with dual cameras—configurable with either twin daylight sensors or a blended electro-optical and thermal imaging channel, delivering target detection and recognition up to 2,000 meters.

The system is deployed against armored vehicles, fortified positions, artillery units, communications hubs, radar stations, and mobile air defense systems. Operationally, the munition functions in coordination with dedicated reconnaissance UAVs, autonomously as an independent asset, or in synchronized group strikes against singular or dispersed targets.

Crucially, with the exception of foreign-sourced electric propulsion units, the platform’s core architecture—including radio communication links, GNSS-denied navigation, automated terminal homing algorithms, and warheads—is designed and produced domestically within Ukraine.

Extending the Operational Envelope: The FLYCAT SL

To strike high-value assets sheltered far beyond tactical artillery lines, Octava Defence developed the FLYCAT SL, a scaled, long-endurance variant engineered for operational-depth disruption.

  • Airframe Dimensions: Wingspan of 1,800 mm; length of 1,950 mm.

  • Extended Range & Endurance: Flight radius exceeding 200 km with over 150 minutes of loiter time.

  • Payload Capacity: Expanded payload capacity between 5 kg and 7 kg.

  • Flight Performance: Maximum speed of 140 km/h.

Configured to take out command posts, fortified logistics centers, heavy armor reserves, and surface-to-air missile batteries deep behind enemy lines, the FLYCAT SL brings strategic strike depth down to the level of mobile, tactical launch crews.

As Western defense strategists increasingly look toward resilient, decentralized architectures capable of surviving high-density peer warfare, systems refined under continuous combat feedback offer a clear blueprint: battlefield success will belong not to the most expensive hardware, but to the architectures that can iterate within weeks.
