Ukraine Unveils Revolutionary Acoustic Sensors for Artillery Detection

In a significant technological leap, Ukraine has introduced state-of-the-art acoustic sensor systems designed to pinpoint enemy artillery with unprecedented accuracy. Unveiled by Ukrainian company Vidar Systems at the Brave1 Defense Tech Innovations Forum 2025, these innovative systems are poised to transform the landscape of modern warfare.

Precision at a 25-Kilometer Range

These sound-measuring complexes are capable of determining the coordinates of enemy artillery positions up to a depth of 25 kilometers, providing a crucial advantage in rapid response. Particularly effective for detecting mortars, these sensors enable military personnel to quickly locate and neutralize threats.

Deployment and Functionality

Each complex comprises five or ten acoustic sensors strategically positioned to cover substantial front-line areas. A 5-sensor complex can cover a 10-kilometer section of the front. The entire equipment set weighs approximately 25 kilograms, allowing for deployment by just one or two individuals.

The sensors operate on the principle of triangulation, utilizing artificial intelligence algorithms to analyze sound waves. Each microphone within the complex captures the same gunshot, determining its direction relative to its position. A central computer then consolidates this data from multiple microphones, overlaying the explosion’s directions onto a map. The intersection point of these directions precisely indicates the coordinates of the hostile fire source.

Advanced Capabilities and Field Testing

The sophisticated software is capable of distinguishing artillery explosions from a wide array of other sounds, ensuring accurate detection in complex acoustic environments.

Pre-production batches of these complexes have already been deployed and are successfully operating on the front lines, demonstrating their reliability and effectiveness in real-world combat scenarios.
