From Frontlines to Fortunes: Defense Tech Unicorns Rise with Ukrainian Ingenuity

The European defense technology landscape is witnessing a remarkable surge, with two companies deeply integrated with Ukraine’s defense efforts, Quantum Systems and TEKEVER, achieving coveted ‘unicorn’ status with valuations exceeding $1 billion. This meteoric rise not only underscores their innovative prowess but also highlights the critical role, resilience, and burgeoning potential of Ukraine-based operations in the global tech arena.

Quantum Systems: German Engineering, Ukrainian Mettle, Unicorn Reality

German-Ukrainian UAV manufacturer Quantum Systems recently soared into the unicorn club, securing a €160 million investment. This milestone is a testament to their cutting-edge drone technology and, significantly, the rapid and successful expansion of their operations within Ukraine, even amidst the full-scale invasion.

At the helm of Quantum Systems in Ukraine is Oleksandr Berezhnyi, Managing Director, who has spearheaded the company’s growth from the ground up over nearly two years. Reflecting on his journey, Berezhnyi, a 44-year-old entrepreneur from Zaporizhzhia with a background in international economics and business administration, remarked, “it all came together as if life had been preparing me for this position”. His path to Quantum Systems was paved through his volunteer work with the “Palianytsia” foundation, which established a UAV operator school and facilitated the initial delivery of Quantum Systems’ Vector reconnaissance drones to Ukrainian special forces.

This initial collaboration blossomed. “When systemic drone deliveries from Germany began in 2023 as technical assistance… it became clear that certain services needed to be localized”, Berezhnyi explained. Sven Kruk, CEO of Quantum Systems, entrusted Berezhnyi with this vision. “Sven Kruk… asked me about my vision for the company’s development in Ukraine and trusted my proposals. So, we arrived at my appointment to the company at the end of March 2023 together; it was an evolutionary development of our cooperation”.

What began as a Service, Support, Training, and Logistics (SSTLC) center rapidly evolved. “My global task was to deploy a center, which in English sounds like SSTLC”, Berezhnyi stated. The Ukrainian facility quickly expanded from repair and maintenance to full-fledged production. “We started by simply delivering systems — the ‘deliver’ stage, then came the ‘support’ and ‘integrate’ stages. And as we delved deeper, organically increasing volumes and personnel, a center for new developments was established, and it became clear that we needed to enter into the production of spare parts as well”, Berezhnyi detailed. This strategic move was partly driven by the Ukrainian government’s call for localization.

Today, the Ukrainian plant boasts a full production cycle for the Vector drones, manufacturing composite airframe parts from imported raw materials and integrating both foreign and Ukrainian-made components, such as cable harnesses and CRPA (Controlled Reception Pattern Antenna) systems. “Currently, we have the capacity to produce one aircraft per day, and I think that by June we will be able to double this number”, Berezhnyi proudly noted. The facility has already repaired around 200 Vector systems and trained 350 pilots. Repair turnaround times have dramatically shrunk from up to six months (when systems were sent to Germany) to a maximum of 3-4 weeks.

The company is also gearing up to produce its new tactical reconnaissance drone, the “Twister,” in Ukraine, with plans for subsequent export to Germany. With around 85 specialists currently employed and plans to expand to 120-130, Quantum Systems is investing heavily in its Ukrainian future. An initial €6 million investment for the plant is part of a larger German aid-funded budget, with Berezhnyi confirming, “the sum allocated… for this factory development program, including spare parts production and R&D, is actually at least twice as large”.

Looking ahead, Quantum Systems is working on advanced AI integrations, including optical navigation and target tracking, with Berezhnyi emphasizing the decision-making protocol: “Detection – by AI, identification – by AI, decision-making – only human”. The company is now actively engaging with Ukrainian state procurement agencies to become a fully integrated part of the domestic supply chain.

TEKEVER: AI-Powered Surveillance Reaches Unicorn Heights with Ukrainian Impact

Adding to this wave of success, Portuguese AI-driven drone specialist TEKEVER has also achieved unicorn status, securing approximately $500 million in a new funding round, pushing its valuation to $1.25 billion. The round saw participation from prominent investors including Ventura Capital, Baillie Gifford, the NATO Innovation Fund (NIF), Iberis Capital, and Crescent Cove.

TEKEVER’s drones, notably the AR3 (a VTOL system) and the AR5 (a long-endurance tactical UAV), have made a significant impact in Ukraine. The company states that its systems have flown over 10,000 combat hours and contributed to the destruction of approximately $4 billion worth of Russian military assets, including two S-400 air defense systems. This real-world performance, continuously refined through feedback from Ukrainian operators, has undoubtedly fueled investor confidence.

Ricardo Mendes, CEO of TEKEVER, commented on the company’s strategy: “TEKEVER’s experience deploying autonomous systems in Ukraine has shown us that the future of defence is, above all, agile. That’s why we are launching our new strategy focused on building a defence innovation ecosystem that enables companies of all sizes to innovate at the required pace and scale for a common mission – securing Europe’s future”.

John Ridge, Chief Adaptation Officer of the NATO Innovation Fund, lauded TEKEVER’s contributions: “TEKEVER has been one of the most successful suppliers of unmanned aerial vehicles to Ukraine. Their unmanned surveillance solutions are helping Ukraine resist Russian aggression, constantly innovating to meet the pace of the conflict”.

A New Dawn for European Defense Tech

The ascent of Quantum Systems and TEKEVER to unicorn status, particularly with their significant operational footprints and impactful partnerships in Ukraine, sends a powerful message. It underscores not only the burgeoning strength and innovation within the European defense-tech sector but also, crucially, the strategic importance, resilience, and innovative capacity of Ukraine as a hub for developing, battle-testing, and scaling cutting-edge technologies. As these companies continue to grow, they pave the way for a more technologically advanced and agile defense posture for Ukraine and its allies.
