HeisterVR: Ukrainian Startup Uses VR to Train Soldiers in Battlefield Sound Recognition

In a landscape where technology increasingly intersects with warfare, a Ukrainian startup called HeisterVR is leveraging the power of virtual reality (VR) to equip soldiers with crucial battlefield skills. Founded by Vladyslav Maliarchuk, a developer whose thesis focused on VR technology, HeisterVR offers a unique training simulator designed to enhance sound-based situational awareness in combat zones.

From PTSD Therapy to Battlefield Training

Maliarchuk’s journey began with an exploration of VR’s potential in PTSD therapy, a path inspired by personal experiences with family members affected by the Russian occupation. However, he soon recognized the limitations of this approach in terms of scalability and cost-effectiveness. Pivoting from their initial focus, Maliarchuk and his partner, data scientist Serhii Brodiuk, shifted their attention to battlefield training.

“We realized that PTSD therapy is incredibly personal,” Maliarchuk explained. “The primary idea is to recreate the traumatic scenario and work with triggers (VR exposure therapy) to lessen their impact on the person. The problem is that this doesn’t scale well.”

This realization led them to participate in a hackathon where they brainstormed new ideas and connected with military instructors and psychologists. The result was HeisterVR, a VR simulator that immerses soldiers in realistic combat scenarios, training them to identify and react to various types of heavy weaponry fire based on sound cues.

Bridging the Gap Between Virtual and Real

HeisterVR offers two training modes:

  • VR Mode: This fully immersive mode places the user in a virtual environment where they can interact with virtual objects.
  • MR (Mixed Reality) Mode: This mode integrates the user’s real-world surroundings into the training, allowing them to interact with both physical and digital elements.

“We understood that in addition to the VR mode, we would also need an MR mode,” Maliarchuk noted, highlighting the importance of adapting to real-world training environments.

Currently in the prototype stage, HeisterVR is undergoing rigorous testing with Ukrainian soldiers, whose feedback is shaping the platform’s development. The team is actively collaborating with instructors and training centers, including representatives from the 95th Air Assault Brigade, who are eager to integrate VR into their training programs.

Preparing Soldiers for the Realities of Combat

Maliarchuk emphasizes the critical role of emotional preparedness in combat, stating, “A soldier’s emotional preparation is no less important than their physical skills, because the ability to work effectively in extreme situations is one of the key aspects of survival.”

HeisterVR aims to bridge the gap between training and real-world combat by providing recruits with simulated experiences that replicate the intensity and uncertainty of the battlefield. “The first two weeks in a combat zone are critical,” Maliarchuk explained. “With XR (extended reality) technologies, we aim to provide this experience even in training centers.”

Funding and Future Plans

HeisterVR has secured initial funding through a grant from Kiss My Apps and plans to operate on a B2G (Business-to-Government) model in the future. The team is actively seeking additional investments to support the platform’s expansion and development.

“Our primary goal is to complete work on the first version of the simulator, hand it over to the military for use, and get feedback,” Maliarchuk stated. “As for the long-term vision, we plan to create a broad library of simulators for training various types of troops.”

HeisterVR’s innovative approach to combat training holds significant promise for enhancing the preparedness and resilience of soldiers facing the challenges of modern warfare.
