Ovul: Democratizing FemTech With At-Home AI Hormone Microscopy
The Pitch
“We track hormones in saliva to help women live their best lives”, says Serhii Zatsarynin, CEO and Founder of Ovul. While traditional hormone tracking remains highly fragmented, invasive, and demanding, Ovul has condensed complex laboratory diagnostics into a beautifully designed, entirely reusable at-home device. By pairing a single drop of saliva with advanced AI microscopy, the platform reveals daily estrogen patterns and unlocks personalized insights into body, mind, and nutrition. Operating between the US and Ukraine, Ovul is transforming the underserved FemTech sector, moving women’s health from reactive clinical visits to proactive daily empowerment.
The Spark: From Medical Giants to the Miracle of Life
The vision for Ovul was born out of personal frustration and high-level medical engineering. While trying to conceive their third child, Serhii and his family realized how essential – yet incredibly stressful and fragmented – the hormone mapping process was for couples.
Drawing from his extensive experience working at Siemens Healthineers, a global leader in medical diagnostics, Serhii knew that the prevailing user experience was outdated. Healthcare testing did not need to be a clinical headache. He founded Ovul to bridge this gap, taking advanced diagnostic concepts and transforming them into a seamless, lifestyle-integrated reality where tracking key biological markers requires nothing more than a single drop of saliva.
The Reality: Navigating the ‘Hardware is Hard’ Myth Under Fire
In the venture capital ecosystem, founders are constantly warned that “hardware is hard”. Serhii views it differently: hardware is manageable if you remain intensely aligned with your users. The team built its first functional prototype from scratch and placed it into users’ hands in just 29 days.
The true challenge emerged during the transition from prototyping to serial production. No hardware startups in Ukraine had navigated this specific scale before, leaving the team to chart their own course. Then, the full-scale war disrupted their entire blueprint. Plans to manufacture directly in Kyiv were hit by unpredictable, months-long supply chain delays.
Instead of retreating, the team leaned into radical customer observation. Through 32 product iterations, they went as far as testing 15 different colors at women’s gatherings to find the perfect aesthetic. They also discovered profound real-world behavior changes, navigating humorous but critical user quirks – like users literally licking the device instead of placing a drop on it – proving that a successful B2C hardware product requires staying intimately close to the user’s actual daily routine.
The Technology & Lifelong Impact
AI-Powered Optics: Ovul uses reusable microscopy combined with machine learning algorithms to track microscopic crystallization patterns in saliva, which map directly to fluctuating estrogen levels throughout the cycle.
The Perimenopause Breakthrough: While initially designed to pinpoint fertile windows for conception, Ovul unlocked a massive secondary market. It is currently the only solution capable of testing daily estrogen non-invasively to support women transitioning through perimenopause and menopause. By matching daily hormone curves with physical symptoms, it provides an essential layer of long-neglected health data.
Hard Facts & Traction
The Ultimate KPI: Beyond standard business metrics, Ovul’s core driving indicator is human impact; the platform has already successfully helped at least eight families overcome fertility hurdles and conceive.
Corporate Validation: Winner of the prestigious L’Oréal Startup Hub 2.0 program, validating the product’s massive cross-over potential in the global longevity and wellness ecosystems.
High User Retention: Demonstrated extreme product stickiness in its perimenopause pilot, with users performing up to 400+ tests over a 13-month period due to the critical nature of the data provided.
The VivaTech 2026 Roadmap: Current Needs
Currently scaling its footprint from its core US market into Europe, Ovul approaches Paris with highly targeted strategic objectives.
Strategic Corporate Alignment: Given that L’Oréal is headquartered in Paris, Ovul’s primary objective at VivaTech is to meet with the L’Oréal corporate team in person to finalize the next operational steps of their joint cooperation.
European Market Entry: Actively engaging with European distribution chains, fertility networks, and menopause support ecosystems to address the continent’s dropping fertility rates and underserved aging demographics.
Fundraising Pipeline: While not closing a round actively this month, Ovul is initiating warm conversations with health-tech and consumer-hardware investors ahead of their formal funding round launching next quarter.
Where to Connect in Paris:
June 16: Meet Serhii in person at the premier official side event, Ukrainian Tech Night (The Village by Crédit Agricole Paris).
Main Forum: Experience the hardware device and engage with the team at the official Ukrainian National Pavilion, J16.
The Vision: Overcoming Global Stigmas
Women’s health has historically been under-researched and heavily medicalized. For Serhii, the long-term goal of Ovul is rooted in global education and systematic change. By bringing hormone data out of closed labs and directly onto the smartphone, the company is stripping away the social stigmas surrounding reproductive cycles and menopause, equipping the next generation of women with the cognitive tools to own their health narratives.
