A new strategic alliance is set to propel Ukrainian defence technology onto the Japanese stage. Tech giant Rakuten Group is joining forces with Ukraine’s defence technology cluster, Brave1, to champion Ukrainian innovation at the upcoming DSEI Japan exhibition, a major event for the global defence and security industry.

This landmark initiative, running from May 21st to 23rd, will see a delegation of Ukrainian companies showcase their cutting-edge, battle-hardened solutions. More than just an exhibition, Rakuten is committed to facilitating the long-term entry of these Ukrainian tech products into the sophisticated Japanese market.
Why This Matters: Battle-Tested Innovation Meets Market Opportunity
The core of Japan’s interest lies in Ukraine’s dual-use technologies – innovations forged and proven in real-world conflict scenarios, yet holding significant potential for both military and civilian applications. For Ukrainian firms, this is a golden ticket: a chance to penetrate the Japanese market, forge powerful partnerships, and attract investment.
“Japan is keenly interested in Ukrainian dual-use technologies because they are battle-tested and can be beneficial for both military and civilian use”, commented Artem Moroz, Head of Investment Attraction at Brave1, speaking to DOU. “Our focus for selection was primarily on software-based dual-use solutions, as these can be exported or collaboratively developed with partners remotely”.
This strategic pivot towards software underscores the adaptability and scalability of Ukrainian tech, a crucial factor for international collaboration.
Meet Ukraine’s Vanguard: The Companies Heading to DSEI Japan
A select group of innovators will represent Ukraine’s burgeoning defence tech sector:
- Dwarf Engineering LLC: Specializing in advanced software and hardware for combat drones.
- Farsight Vision LLC: Developer of AI-powered geospatial intelligence software solutions for security and defence.
- Griselda: A platform delivering real-time situational awareness.
- LifesaverSIM: An innovative training and practice tool for emergency services personnel.
- SkyFall Industries LLC: Manufacturer of UAVs, renowned for their Vampire and Shrike drones.
- Swarmer: Software developers for autonomous drone swarm technology.
Future Horizons: Deepening Ties
The DSEI Japan showcase is just the beginning. Brave1 and Rakuten are already planning to expand their collaboration, aiming to involve the Japanese government and other key partners in the future.
This initiative gains further significance considering Rakuten’s growing footprint in Ukraine. The company opened an office in Kyiv in 2024 and became a resident of Diia.City. Last year, Rakuten reported that 40 individuals in Ukraine were collaborating with Rakuten Viber, highlighting an established presence that now extends into fostering deep tech partnerships.
This collaboration signals a powerful synergy: Ukraine’s resilient and innovative defence tech ecosystem gaining a formidable ally in Rakuten to unlock new global opportunities, starting with the discerning Japanese market. The world will be watching.
