European Defense Integration in Action: BraveTech EU Launches DefTech Forges with Grants Up to €120,000 and Scale-Up Pathways

As the war of attrition intensifies and Ukraine faces another high-stakes winter of infrastructure and logistics defense, battlefield readiness is increasingly determined not by conventional stockpile volumes, but by technological adaptation cycles. Speed-to-deployment and industrial interoperability between Ukraine and European defense ecosystems have become existential imperatives.

To bridge the gap between frontline operational feedback and European defense industrial capabilities, the European Commission, in partnership with Ukraine’s defense tech cluster Brave1 and the European Defence Agency (EDA), has officially opened applications for DefTech Forges under the flagship BraveTech EU grant framework, as announced by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.

Direct Capital Injection: Up to €750,000 for High-Impact Hardware and Software

The initiative targets dual-use and defense tech innovators from both Ukraine and European Union member states with solutions at Technology Readiness Level 4+ (TRL 4+).

Selected startups will compete for non-dilutive grants of €120,000, with high-performing cohorts unlocking follow-on operational testing with the European Defence Agency and scale-up grant funding of up to €750,000.

Key Program Milestones & Deadlines:

  • Application Window: Open through September 6, 2026.

  • Expert Evaluation: An independent panel of military and technical mentors will evaluate submissions to select the top 40 solutions.

  • DefTech Forge Live Trials: The 40 shortlisted teams will be split into two cohorts of 20 for intensive offline operational testing scheduled tentatively for November 9–13, 2026, in Germany and Romania. Participating manufacturers will test their hardware/software in field conditions and receive direct, real-time feedback from active military operators.

  • Winner Selection: A total of 6 winning teams (3 from each event) will secure immediate €120,000 grants.

  • EDA Scale-Up Track: Winning companies advance to further joint validation and testing tracks with the European Defence Agency, unlocking follow-on capital of up to €750,000.

Brave1’s leadership and technical specialists will directly participate in the application review pipeline and sit on the judging panels across both testing locations.

Five Core Battlefield Technology Challenges

DefTech Forges focuses on mission-critical bottlenecks where localized electronic warfare (EW) dominance and contested airspace demand rapid iteration:

  1. Missile and UAV Guidance Hardware/Software Suites: Multi-mode targeting architectures (passive, semi-active, active) engineered for reliable terminal guidance in high-interference operational theaters.

  2. Autonomous Strike UAVs: “Smart” loitering munitions, FPV platforms, and decentralized swarm coordination requiring minimal operator intervention.

  3. Modular Drone Architectures: Plug-and-play payloads and rapid mission-reconfiguration capabilities in field logistics setups.

  4. Target Acquisition & Detection Systems: Next-generation sensor arrays, signal detection, and integrated tracking suites.

  5. EW-Resilient Flight Controllers & UAV Platforms: Hardened avionic stacks designed to maintain telemetry and navigation under dense electronic countermeasures.

The Strategic Outlook: Industrializing Joint Resilience Ahead of Winter

In a prolonged conflict marked by supply-chain pressure and electronic spectrum saturation, fragmented national R&D pipelines are insufficient. DefTech Forges establishes an operational bridge where Ukrainian combat experience directly informs European defense engineering, and European capital accelerates Ukrainian deep-tech scale-ups.

By anchoring technical validation in real operational environments before major seasonal escalations, BraveTech EU is establishing a blueprint for sustained pan-European collective defense.

Detailed participation guidelines and submissions are available directly via the official BraveTech EU portal.
