New SHARK-M Tech and £200M UK Investment Propel Ukrspecsystems onto the Global Stage

In a powerful demonstration of relentless innovation and strategic growth, Ukrainian defence-tech leader Ukrspecsystems has unveiled a game-changing upgrade for its SHARK-M reconnaissance UAV. Revealed at the MSPO defence exhibition in Poland, the new optical system is more than just a technical enhancement; it’s a symbol of a company rapidly scaling its production, hardening its technology on the battlefield, and launching a major strategic expansion into the United Kingdom.

A Sharper Eye in the Sky: The New SHARK-M

The SHARK-M, a formidable intelligence asset introduced in January 2025, is now equipped with a state-of-the-art, gyro-stabilized opto-electronic station. This isn’t just an update; it’s a tactical revolution.

While previous iterations required a choice between either a daylight or a thermal camera, the new module fuses both into a single, compact unit. This dual-camera capability, combined with a newly integrated laser rangefinder, dramatically enhances the drone’s reconnaissance power. It allows operators to not only see more in any condition, day or night, but also to provide hyper-accurate targeting data for precision strikes.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the engineering behind it. Ukrspecsystems’ team has effectively miniaturized the technology used in its larger PD-2 UAV, shrinking a 3-kilogram system into a mere 1.1-kilogram payload for the SHARK-M. The only trade-off for this massive reduction in size and weight was the optical zoom on the thermal camera—a small price for a quantum leap in versatility.

Perhaps the most crucial upgrade for frontline operators is the introduction of field-swappable modules. Previously, changing a camera payload meant a trip to a service centre for replacement and calibration. Now, UAV crews can perform the swap directly in the field, maximizing operational uptime and mission flexibility. This feature will also be retrofitted onto existing SHARK-M airframes, ensuring the entire fleet benefits from the latest advancements.

From Workshop to Warfighter: A Story of Explosive Growth

This technological leap is a direct reflection of Ukrspecsystems’ staggering industrial momentum. Andriy Rymaruk, the company’s Deputy CEO, recently revealed that production has skyrocketed from approximately 300-350 aircraft per month last year to a current output of 1,000-1,100 units per month.

“And we plan to at least double this again next year”, Rymaruk stated, signaling the company’s aggressive ambition. This rapid scaling is coupled with a unique value proposition: offering its battle-hardened service centres to test and validate European-made equipment in real combat conditions, forging a new path for international defence collaboration.

Project Britannia: A £200M Strategic Alliance

This rapid scaling culminates in the company’s most ambitious move yet: a £200 million investment to establish a major presence in the United Kingdom. This landmark project underscores the deepening strategic partnership between Ukraine and the UK.

The investment includes:

  • An 11,000 m² state-of-the-art drone manufacturing facility in Mildenhall.
  • A dedicated testing and training centre in Elmsett, Suffolk.
  • The creation of up to 500 new jobs and training programmes in the region.

Production is slated to begin in early 2026, with UK recruitment starting later this year.

Rory Chamberlain, Managing Director of Ukrspecsystems UK, framed the move as a fusion of strengths. “By combining our combat-proven technology with Britain’s unparalleled aviation and industrial expertise, Ukrspecsystems aims to become a global leader in unmanned systems,” he said. “The UK will be our launchpad for international markets”.

The initiative has been warmly welcomed by the UK government. Maria Eagle, Minister for Defence Procurement, commented, “Collaboration with companies like Ukrspecsystems gives us access to their innovative, battle-tested designs, strengthening our Armed Forces. This investment will bolster our industrial base, create jobs, and fuel economic growth”.

As Ukrspecsystems prepares to showcase its technology at the DSEI 2025 exhibition in London this week (September 9-12), the industry is watching closely for announcements of new UK partnerships. The message is clear: Ukrspecsystems is no longer just a Ukrainian success story. It is a rising global force, forged in the crucible of conflict and powered by a vision for the future of defence technology.
