The Tech of Resilience: Challenger Opens Applications for Equity-Free Strategic Accelerator

While global markets navigate a cooling VC climate, Ukraine is carving out a unique niche: high-stakes technology born from necessity. The newly launched Challenger Sustainability Accelerator is moving beyond “green” buzzwords to support startups in demining, prosthetics, energy, and construction—sectors that are no longer just optional, but mission-critical for Europe’s security and reconstruction.

The challenge for Ukrainian deep-tech founders is rarely a lack of innovation; the country has become a real-world sandbox for the most advanced solutions in mobility and med-tech. The real bottleneck is the “valley of death” between a proven local pilot and the regulatory complexity of the European market.

Bridging the Gap: From Battlefield Innovation to Global Scale

The Challenger Sustainability Accelerator, organized by Civitta, is a three-month equity-free program designed to professionalize this transition. By focusing on sectors like energy resilience and advanced prosthetics, the program aims to turn “wartime tech” into sustainable, venture-backed businesses.

“We are launching the Challenger Sustainability Accelerator to support Ukrainian startups developing technological solutions in sectors that are critical for the country’s recovery and development”, says Iurii-Volodymyr Blavt, Co-founder of Challenger Accelerator and Partner at Civitta. “Ukrainian teams are already demonstrating strong innovation in areas such as green tech, energy, mobility, and other technology fields, and our goal is to help them connect with key industry players, access expert mentorship, and accelerate their path to international markets”.

Strategic Partnership: The Swedish Deep-Tech Pipeline

A key driver of this cohort is the partnership with THINGS, Sweden’s premier deep-tech hub. For startups working in construction and energy, this provides a direct line to the Nordic ecosystem—a region known for having the highest density of “impact unicorns” per capita.

“We are very happy to support some of Ukraine’s early-stage startups by providing targeted mentoring and access to our international networks”, says Linda Krondahl, CEO at THINGS. “The program focuses on industries of strategic importance, and we look forward to connecting the participating companies to relevant partners, customers and investors during the program”.

Building a Future within the EU

The program is funded by the Swedish Institute, a government agency that views strengthening Ukrainian entrepreneurship as a cornerstone of the country’s integration into the European Union.

“Strengthening entrepreneurship in Ukraine is not only vital for inclusive economic development, but also for giving people the opportunity to shape their own future as the country moves closer to the EU”, says Magdalena Ellfors, Programme Manager Ukraine, Swedish Institute.

Program Architecture and Founder Benefits

Unlike traditional accelerators that demand early equity, Challenger operates on an equity-free model. The curriculum includes 12 hands-on workshops, 20+ hours of individual mentoring, and a study visit to Sweden to attend the Tech Arena conference.

The journey concludes with a Demo Day in Kyiv, where teams will present their solutions to international investors and corporate partners.

Requirements for Selection:

  • Stage: Pilot-ready prototype.

  • Team: Minimum of two people.

  • Verticals: Demining, prosthetics, energy, green tech, mobility, or construction.
