“Varta 2” and “Khorunzhiy”: New Ukrainian Armored Vehicles Boost Defense Capabilities

“Varta 2” Armored Car:

Ukrainian Armor has unveiled its latest innovation, the “Varta 2” armored car, at the MSPO 2024 International Defense Industry Exhibition in Kielce, Poland. This all-new vehicle is built on a Base chassis and boasts a 14-ton gross weight and a top speed of 110 km/h.

Designed to transport 10 crew members, the “Varta 2” prioritizes safety with anti-mine seats, a suspended floor system to mitigate blast impact, and advanced security features. It also incorporates modern light-masking systems and an integrated air filtration system for protection against chemical and biological threats.

Equipped with the “Sich” combat module and a 30mm automatic cannon, the “Varta 2” offers substantial firepower for infantry support and anti-armor operations. It meets NATO STANAG 3 ballistic protection standards and 3a/3b anti-mine protection levels. The “ICoMWare” software and hardware complex enhances situational awareness and information support for unit commanders through a secure Mesh network using DTC broadband radios. With independent suspension and a CTIS system, the “Varta 2” demonstrates high speed and obstacle-clearing capabilities.

“Khorunzhiy” Armored Personnel Carrier:

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has codified and approved the domestic “Khorunzhiy” armored personnel carrier for supply to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This vehicle represents a deep modernization of the Soviet BTR-60, featuring Finnish steel construction, modern electronics, and the ability to be produced in six variations.

The “Khorunzhiy’s” hull is constructed from high-quality Finnish steel, enhancing ballistic protection without increasing weight. It provides perimeter protection against 7.62mm steel-core bullets, and the frontal armor can withstand heavy machine gun fire from 10 meters. The hull’s bottom design and special anti-mine seats safeguard the crew from explosions equivalent to 6 kg of TNT. A redesigned interior improves ergonomics and ease of disembarkation through the rear.

Significantly more powerful than the BTR-60, the “Khorunzhiy” replaces the two 90-horsepower gasoline engines with a 330-horsepower diesel engine. This enables a top speed exceeding 80 km/h and a range of over 500 kilometers.

The new APC features modern electronics, video surveillance cameras, air conditioning, and an autonomous generator for operation with the engine off. Its armament includes a combat module with a 14.5mm machine gun or a 30x113mm cannon.

The “Khorunzhiy” can be manufactured in six variants: linear armored personnel carrier, personnel transporter, medical evacuation vehicle, repair and recovery vehicle, command and staff vehicle, and self-propelled mortar carrier.

These developments highlight Ukraine’s commitment to advancing its domestic defense industry and reducing reliance on foreign suppliers. Both the “Varta 2” armored car and the “Khorunzhiy” APC demonstrate Ukraine’s ability to innovate and produce modern, effective military vehicles to meet the challenges of contemporary warfare.
