Winter in Ukraine means freezing temperatures and the constant threat of blackouts. Millions are left without power or heat due to the ongoing war and its devastating impact on the country’s energy infrastructure. But there’s hope on the horizon! Tech4Good Global Challenge #1: Energy for Ukraine brought together 75 innovative companies from around the globe to find solutions to this urgent problem.
The Best of the Best
From a pool of impressive applicants, experts selected 7 groundbreaking projects with the potential to not only help Ukraine survive the winter but also assist other regions facing conflict or natural disasters. Here they are:
- BIO2CHP (Greece): Transforms biomass waste into heat and electricity on-site. Affordable and sustainable!
- Icewind (Iceland/USA): Ultra-robust vertical-axis wind turbines that can withstand even the harshest Icelandic weather. Perfect for powering communication towers, weather stations, and remote locations.
- GKinetic Energy Ltd (Ireland): Modular turbines generating clean energy from free-flowing water. Simple yet effective!
- PhotonSolarSystems (Italy): A revolutionary device that provides reliable power in any situation, especially during emergencies and natural disasters.
- AC Biode (Japan/Luxembourg): On-site methane production from waste and a catalytic process to turn plastic into hydrogen. Technologies of the future!
- MY SOLAR PLANT by Xizan (Spain): A solar generator for home use and life on the go. The power of the sun, always with you!
- Olsights (UK): A spatial energy planning toolkit that helps match energy supply with demand, integrating renewable resources, infrastructure, and socio-economic data.
What’s Next?
Tech4Good Challenge is committed to making a real difference. The team is actively working on:
- Fundraising: Helping the selected companies secure grants, investments, and sponsorships.
- Implementation: Assisting with regulatory processes and deployment of these technologies in Ukraine.
- Collaboration: Working closely with the Embassy of Ukraine in Spain to ensure these projects get the support they need.
