Ukraine’s domestically-produced Magura V5 unmanned surface vessel (USV) has significantly altered the naval balance in the Black Sea, according to Ukrainian intelligence. This innovative drone has not only neutralized a significant portion of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet but also achieved a world first by shooting down an enemy helicopter.
“
The [Magura V5] can carry a quarter of a ton of explosives,” the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine (GUR) stated. “Thanks to this drone, we managed to clear the Black Sea area of the threat of the Russian fleet and ensure free navigation.” [Source: Liga.net]
The GUR reports that the Magura V5, operating under the command of special unit Group 13, has destroyed 15 Russian warships and other vessels. This success has forced the Russian fleet to withdraw from their base in occupied Crimea, effectively crippling their operations in the region.
“The very first task has already been successfully completed: this is a complete blockade of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. It is absolutely not functioning,” emphasized the commander of the special unit, codenamed “Thirteenth.” [Source: Liga.net]

In a groundbreaking development, the Magura V5 demonstrated its versatility by downing a Russian Mi-8 helicopter on December 31st, 2024. Equipped with R-73 air-to-air missiles, the drone successfully engaged the helicopter during a combat operation near Cape Tarkhankut.
“Another enemy helicopter of the same type was hit by fire and managed to reach its base airfield,” the GUR added. [Source: MILITARNYI]
This unprecedented feat marks the first time in history that a naval drone has successfully destroyed an aerial target. The Magura V5’s ability to operate not only in the Black Sea but also in any other body of water, including oceans, highlights its potential to reshape naval warfare.
The commander of Group 13 hinted at future developments, stating, “This platform will be used as an anti-aircraft missile system, only on water. Step by step, we are taking control not only at sea but also in the air.” [Source: Liga.net]
The Magura V5’s success story underscores the growing importance of unmanned systems in modern warfare and showcases Ukraine’s innovative approach to defense technology.
