Ukrainian engineers have taken their sea drone game to a whole new level, turning the Magura V5 into a formidable force multiplier. The latest upgrade? A swarm of decoy drones that accompany the Magura V5, overloading Russian defense systems and clearing the path for the main strike drones to hit their targets.

Magura V5: Stealth and Precision
The Magura V5, or Maritime Autonomous Guard Unmanned Robotic Apparatus V5, is designed to strike enemy ships and coastal targets. Its low profile and minimal radar signature make it a stealthy predator, difficult for enemy radar to detect. The drone can autonomously navigate to its target, avoiding obstacles and laying mines along the way. Upon approaching its prey, the Magura V5 unleashes its full speed, ramming into the target with devastating force.
Decoy Swarm: Overwhelming Defenses
To further enhance its effectiveness, the Magura V5 now operates alongside a swarm of decoy drones. These decoys saturate enemy defense systems, creating confusion and allowing the main strike drones to slip through undetected. This innovative tactic significantly increases the chances of a successful attack.
Aviation-Grade Missile: Taking Down Helicopters
In a recent development, the Magura V5 has been modified to carry R-73 air-to-air missiles. This breakthrough enables the sea drone to not only destroy ships but also engage enemy aircraft.
In a recent operation, this modified Magura V5 took down two Russian helicopters and severely damaged a third. “We didn’t hide from aviation as usual,” says a commander from Group 13, “but instead, we sought out encounters with the enemy. A helicopter is a fast target. Once it appears in our field of view, we have only a few minutes to take up a favorable launch position. We calculated everything, and the missile hit the target on the first launch.”
The R-73 missile has been upgraded with a new guidance system, capable of operating at a wider angle. The modernized missile has a range of up to 40 km and a warhead weighing approximately 8 kg.
Sea Drones: A Game Changer
Last year, a representative of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Andriy Yusov, revealed that sea drones had inflicted $500 million in losses on the Russian Black Sea Fleet. The Magura V5 has proven to be a highly effective weapon in striking Russian ships in the Black Sea.
The Sea Baby, another Ukrainian sea drone, has also demonstrated its ability to surprise the Russians. In December last year, the Security Service of Ukraine released footage of an operation in the Kerch Bay, where Sea Baby drones engaged Russian forces with heavy machine guns. These new versions of the Sea Baby are equipped with large-caliber machine guns with ballistic automatic guidance and target capture programs.
The Magura V5 and Sea Baby sea drones have revolutionized naval warfare, showcasing the power of unmanned technology. With their ability to operate autonomously, carry a variety of weapons, and overwhelm enemy defenses, these drones are a force to be reckoned with.
