In a significant advancement for its domestic defense technology, Ukraine has introduced “Ursula”, a compact, one-meter-long unmanned surface vessel (USV) poised to redefine riverine warfare. Developed by the company NoviTechNet, this innovative drone is a multi-role asset, capable of seamlessly transitioning between reconnaissance, kamikaze strikes, and even acting as a mobile launchpad for aerial drones.

Announced by the “Association of Ukrainian Engineers”, Ursula represents a new wave of versatile, low-profile naval technology designed for the complex and contested waters of Ukraine’s rivers and coastal regions. Its modular design is its key strength, allowing for a range of mission profiles that can adapt to the fluid demands of the battlefield.
In its reconnaissance configuration, Ursula can stealthily navigate rivers and canals, providing crucial intelligence on enemy movements and positions in near-coastal areas. Its small size makes it a difficult target to detect, allowing it to operate discreetly in high-risk zones.
When configured for attack, Ursula transforms into a potent “kamikaze” drone, delivering an explosive payload to neutralize enemy vessels and infrastructure. This capability provides a swift and precise method for engaging targets in areas that might be too dangerous for larger, crewed boats.
Perhaps its most groundbreaking feature is the ability to transport and deploy a smaller unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). This “aircraft carrier” functionality is a force multiplier, conserving the UAV’s battery life for critical moments and enabling surprise aerial reconnaissance or strikes from unexpected vectors. “This drone is suitable for sabotage and reconnaissance operations in the challenging conditions of river networks and frontline water areas,” stated the Association of Ukrainian Engineers.
Ursula is not the first of its kind to emerge from Ukraine’s burgeoning defense-tech sector. The Defense Forces have already begun testing the “Black Widow 2”, another small, one-meter riverine drone. The Black Widow 2 boasts a weight of 8 kg, a top speed of 40 km/h, and a range of up to 10 km. It can be armed with a 3 kg payload, sufficient to disable smaller boats. Equipped with a versatile rotating camera with night vision, it can also loiter in a standby mode for days, awaiting the opportune moment to strike.
While the Black Widow 2 is a formidable asset in its own right, Ursula’s ability to deploy aerial drones marks a significant evolution in the tactical application of small USVs. This development underscores a clear trend in Ukrainian military innovation: the creation of highly adaptable, cost-effective, and domestically-produced solutions to gain a technological edge. As these new platforms undergo further testing and deployment, they are set to play an increasingly crucial role in shaping the operational landscape of Ukraine’s waterways.
