Kyiv’s tech scene pulsed with innovation at the recent Defence Builder Demo Day, where a dynamic cohort of Ukrainian startups unveiled cutting-edge technologies designed to reshape the landscape of modern warfare. Moving beyond mere concepts, these ventures presented tangible solutions in unmanned maritime operations, electronic warfare (EW) countermeasures, and immersive drone piloting, capturing the keen interest of both investors and military stakeholders.

“This Demo Day has once again proven the immense value of accelerators, especially when the team, mentors, and partners work as a unified force”, declared Kateryna Bezsudna, CEO of Defence Builder. The event, which marked the finale of the accelerator’s second four-month program, showcased nine graduate teams presenting battle-tested solutions. Following the pitches, three startups that demonstrated the most significant progress were each awarded a $30,000 grant. The investment came directly from Defence Builder’s co-founding partners: Sigma Software Labs, KSE, and Buntar Aerospace.
Grant Winners Spearhead Next-Gen Defence Solutions
Taking center stage was Strug, crowned “Startup of the Batch” for its groundbreaking FPV drone-carrying unmanned surface vessel (USV). Boasting an impressive 240km tactical radius, this agile craft is engineered to deliver critical drone payloads to strategic coastal regions, including the currently occupied Crimean Peninsula. “The team has already produced a pilot batch of six boats and plans to transfer them to military units”. the organizers announced. With a clear vision for expansion, Strug is now actively seeking $500,000 in investment to scale its production capabilities.
In a domain critical to modern electronic warfare, Coalas secured the “Military Choice Solution” award for its sophisticated telemetry systems tailored for FPV drones and ground robotic platforms. Their proprietary radio control technology significantly enhances the resilience of unmanned systems against enemy EW jamming, simultaneously extending their operational range – a crucial advantage in contested environments. “Coalas has already installed its solutions on over 10,000 drones and is seeking $600,000 in investment for crucial R&D, scaling their production, strategic marketing initiatives, and essential equipment procurement”, confirmed the Defence Builder team.
The “Rising Force” recognition was bestowed upon Barvinok-5 for their remarkably swift development of a high-performance digital video module for FPV drones. Achieving a minimum viable product (MVP) in a mere four months, the team is now focused on launching serial production with a targeted funding of $300,000. Their ambitious near-term objectives include assembling the initial 100 functional modules by the third quarter, seamlessly integrating with leading drone manufacturers, and conducting rigorous operational testing directly on the front lines. Notably, Barvinok-5’s earlier innovation, the BarvinokLRS drone control module, is already actively serving with Ukrainian military units, demonstrating a consistent commitment to providing tangible battlefield advantages.
A Glimpse into Ukraine’s Defence Innovation Pipeline
The Defence Builder Demo Day also provided a platform for other promising ventures, each addressing critical needs in modern defence:
- Birds of Fury: Developing a kamikaze aircraft capable of both guided and autonomous deep-strike missions behind enemy lines.
- Technary: Presenting the “Mongoose”, a reactive unmanned aerial vehicle interceptor designed to counter enemy drone threats.
- Warm Wind: Introducing the first digital smart detonator for controlled mine detonation, offering enhanced safety and precision.
- Frontyr: Showcasing a mid-range strike complex comprised of a cost-effective strike drone working in tandem with a relay drone for extended reach.
- Legit Force: Developing rapidly deployable and remotely controllable smart minefields, offering a dynamic approach to territorial defense.
- DronmateAI: Creating a military-grade microcomputer engineered for autonomous combat systems, paving the way for advanced robotic capabilities.
Beyond the technological ingenuity on display, Defence Builder emphasized the crucial support provided to these startups in navigating the complexities of scaling production, securing investment, and addressing vital financial and legal considerations. By seamlessly integrating business acumen with practical defence expertise, the accelerator provides a fertile ground for these innovations to mature into impactful companies.
“This is an investment not only in technology but also in the speed and effectiveness that directly strengthen the Ukrainian military on the battlefield”, asserted Defence Builder, concluding with a strong call to action for investors and strategic partners to join them in empowering Ukraine’s defence through cutting-edge innovation.
