Katran Unleashed: Ukraine’s “Strategic” Sea Drone Gets a 100km Long Arm

Ukraine’s naval drone program is taking another audacious leap forward. The formidable “Katran” uncrewed surface vessel (USV) has been equipped with new long-range weaponry, capable of striking targets up to an astonishing 100 kilometers away. This significant upgrade transforms the drone from a coastal threat into a true strategic asset, extending Ukraine’s lethal reach deep into enemy territory.

The revelation came from a special forces operator of the GUR‘s “Black Sea Legion”, callsign “Ninth”, in a recent interview with Militarnyi. He described the complex as a “strategic action tool”, underscoring a dramatic shift in its operational capability.

While the new armament provides a 100 km strike radius, the Katran platform itself boasts an incredible operational range. “The complex allows for operations at distances of over 2,000 kilometers”, “Ninth” stated. “Although we officially declare 1,600 km, we have examples of operations at distances up to 3,000 km”. With the ability to remain at sea for up to six days, the Katran can patiently hunt for high-value targets far from home.

A Versatile Arsenal at Sea

Developed by the Ukrainian company Military Armored Company HUB, the Katran family was designed for multi-domain warfare. These USVs are not just one-trick ponies; they are modular motherships capable of engaging targets in the air, on the sea, and deep behind enemy lines.

The drone’s superstructure can be fitted with a diverse array of armaments, from missile systems to swarms of FPV drones, turning the Katran into a floating, semi-autonomous arsenal. To ensure these weapons hit their mark with deadly accuracy, the platform leverages Artificial Intelligence for precision targeting.

The Sci-Fi Cockpit

Piloting this next-generation weapon feels like stepping into the future. The operator sits in a dedicated control chair, gripping an aircraft-style yoke and throttle. Vital information and video feeds from the drone’s day and night cameras are streamed directly to the operator’s augmented reality (AR) glasses, with the feed duplicated on a nearby monitor for command staff. This high-tech interface ensures seamless control and situational awareness during complex, long-range missions.

This latest development marks a significant point in the rapid evolution of Ukraine’s naval drones. Since their first combat use in the Black Sea in June 2023, these systems have evolved from simple, explosive-laden kamikaze boats into sophisticated, reusable, multi-mission platforms that are reshaping the rules of modern naval warfare.

As we at TechUkraine have covered before, the Katran family represents a game-changer in maritime security. This latest upgrade only cements its status as a pivotal piece of technology in Ukraine’s arsenal.
