The gap between theoretical technology and frontline deployment remains the single biggest bottleneck in modern defense innovation. While traditional venture capital often backs long-term R&D, today’s security landscape demands immediate operational readiness.
To bridge this divide, Ukraine’s defense tech cluster Brave1, with the support of the Ministry of Defense, has officially opened applications for its annual startup competition, Battle Proven.
The pitch competition will take place during Defense Tech Valley, Ukraine’s premier defense technology summit, scheduled for September 16–17 in Lviv. This year, the flagship event is scaling significantly, with organizers projecting over 7,000 participants from 50 countries, including top-tier international investors, government officials, and defense industry leaders.
The Battle Proven Competition: Product Over Pitch Decks
At the core of Defense Tech Valley is the Battle Proven track. This competition intentionally shifts the focus away from polished slide decks and marketing rhetoric, prioritizing the tangible potential of the technology itself. The evaluation committee is clear: victory belongs exclusively to teams whose solutions can measurably alter operational outcomes on the battlefield.
To ensure a targeted evaluation process, the competition is structured across three distinct categories, catering to different stages of technological maturity:
TRAILBLAZERS (The Visionaries): Designed for teams with breakthrough ideas. Winning this category provides the validation and early-stage resources required to transform a concept into a viable proof of concept.
GAMECHANGERS (The Builders): Tailored for teams that already have a working prototype. Participation offers direct access to combat testing and unvarnished, real-time feedback from front-line operators.
POWER PLAYERS (The Architects): Aimed at companies whose products are already deployed in active combat. The focus here is strictly on scaling, securing venture backing, and transitioning to systemic mass production.
The Core Criterion: Immediate Operational Impact
Unlike standard startup competitions that evaluate abstract market potential, Battle Proven focuses heavily on technology readiness levels (TRL) and immediate viability.
Target Audience: Domestic and international defense tech startups across various stages of development.
Key Benchmarks: The primary selection criterion is tactical relevance. Eligible products must either already be deployed in active combat or projected for frontline deployment within the next 12 months.
The urgency of the selection process reflects the event’s timeline. Applications are open until June 15, 2026, giving teams less than three weeks to submit their technology profiles.
Pitch Format and Investor Exposure
The most promising teams will secure a spot to pitch live in Lviv before a panel of global venture capitalists and defense procurement specialists.
Format: A strict 5-minute pitch followed by a 2-minute Q&A session.
Language: English.
Key Evaluation Pillars: Pitch decks must clearly articulate the problem-solution fit, competitive advantages, market scalability, and financial runways, alongside a transparent breakdown of how the requested funds will drive tactical impact.
The organizers have noted that due to high demand and strict security protocols for the in-person event, selection will be highly competitive. The internal committee reserves the right to decline applications based on the maturity and relevance of the technology.

Last year’s summit brought together over 5,000 industry insiders and 300 investors. The 2026 iteration is positioned to serve as Europe’s central marketplace for battle-tested innovation.
