Thales and Ukroboronprom Join Forces to Bolster Ukraine’s Defense Capabilities

In a move set to significantly enhance Ukraine’s defense industry, French defense giant Thales and Ukrainian state-owned conglomerate Ukroboronprom have announced the establishment of a joint venture within Ukraine. This strategic partnership, revealed by Herman Smetanin, Minister of Strategic Industries of Ukraine, will focus on developing cutting-edge technologies in several key areas.

The joint venture will prioritize bolstering Ukraine’s air defense systems, refining radar capabilities, advancing electronic warfare measures, and improving tactical communication and optronic systems. This collaboration builds on Thales’ existing support for Ukraine, which includes supplying Ground Master 200 radar systems and providing ongoing maintenance for its equipment used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Thales, renowned for its expertise in radar technology, optical sights, and thermal imaging equipment, brings a wealth of experience to the partnership. The company’s diverse portfolio, encompassing missile systems, protection solutions, and air defense complexes, will further contribute to Ukraine’s defense capabilities.

This initiative also extends beyond the French branch of Thales. Thales Belgium has signed a memorandum with Ukraine to co-produce 70-mm guided missiles, specifically designed to counter unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). These missiles, featuring the advanced FZ-123 warhead, will be integrated into the FZ-275 LGR rocket system, providing Ukraine with a crucial edge in drone defense.

This joint venture marks a significant step forward for Ukraine’s defense industry, promising to strengthen its technological capabilities and enhance its self-reliance in the face of ongoing challenges.
