The Alligator-9 represents a leap forward in Ukraine’s naval drone strategy. Moving beyond single-purpose explosive drones, this USV is engineered as a modular platform capable of carrying diverse payloads tailored to specific mission requirements. Its versatility is key:

  • Drone Carrier: The Alligator-9 can deploy 6 to 10 smaller “Alligator 5 ToD” drones. These function either as kamikaze strike drones or potentially as torpedoes, offering a potent swarm capability against enemy surface vessels, particularly those with smaller displacements.
  • Laser Platform: It can be equipped with the newly revealed “Tryzub 90” laser system (a likely variant or related system to the ground-based Tryzub), adding a directed energy weapon capability to the naval domain.
  • Electronic Warfare Hub: In an EW configuration, the Alligator-9 carries 3 to 5 specialized “Alligator 5 EW” drones.   • Hard-Kill Potential: The Tryzub is stated to be capable of destroying strike drones, aerial bombs, cruise missiles, and even ballistic missiles at ranges up to 3,000 meters. Against helicopters, aircraft, and reconnaissance drones, the effective destruction range extends up to 5,000 meters.
  • Soft-Kill/Blinding: Beyond destruction, the laser can be used to blind the sensors of drones, cruise missiles, helicopters, and aircraft at distances up to 10,000 meters.

Video demonstrations showcased the laser engaging a ground target and successfully blinding the camera of an FPV drone. While currently operated manually via joystick based on the footage, suggesting it’s an advanced functional prototype, automated targeting is a likely future enhancement.

First mentioned publicly in December 2024, Commander Sukharevskyi noted then that Ukraine was potentially the fifth country globally possessing such laser technology. Developed reportedly within months by Ukrainian specialists, the Tryzub is undergoing rigorous testing. Sukharevskyi highlighted its intended role in countering Shahed-type drones and enemy reconnaissance UAVs, protecting critical infrastructure and civilian populations. He envisions a future where mobile air defense groups might be equipped with these laser systems instead of traditional machine guns, dramatically increasing their anti-drone effectiveness.
