Despite the ongoing geopolitical complexities and differing views among some American politicians regarding the war in Ukraine, technological collaboration between our nations continues to strengthen. Two Ukrainian companies have recently secured contracts with the US Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) to develop advanced drone prototypes under the Artemis, a project to operationally evaluate long range, one way platforms.. This project not only highlights the high caliber of Ukrainian technology but also demonstrates how Ukrainian innovation can contribute to bolstering the defense capabilities of our strategic partners.

The Artemis program, initiated by the US Congress, aims to develop cost-effective, long-range drones. These unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) must be capable of rapid deployment, carrying diverse payloads, and operating effectively in environments challenged by electronic warfare (EW) and satellite spoofing. In this competition, Ukrainian companies are vying with American giants such as Dragoon and AeroVironment.
The selection of two Ukrainian companies to participate in this program is a significant achievement, underscoring the competitiveness of the Ukrainian defense industrial complex on the international stage. It’s noteworthy that each Ukrainian manufacturer is partnering with an American software development company, emphasizing the integration of Ukrainian technologies into the broader US defense innovation ecosystem. One is collaborating with Swan, and the other with Auterion.
Key Details of the Artemis Program:
- Objective: To develop low-cost, expendable drones for operations in Europe and the Indo-Pacific region.
- Requirements: Flight range from 50 to 1,000+ km, resistance to EW and spoofing, modularity, and rapid integration of new equipment.
- Cost: Ranging from under $20,000 to $70,000 per unit, depending on the configuration.
- Production pace: One of the Ukrainian companies already produces approximately 200 systems per month.
The participation of Ukrainian companies in the Artemis program marks a significant step for the Ukrainian defense industry. This is not only an opportunity to showcase their technologies on the global stage but also to attract investment and expand production capacity. Furthermore, this project facilitates knowledge and experience exchange between Ukrainian and American engineers, potentially leading to further innovations in the defense sector.
The collaboration between Ukrainian companies and the US Army within the Artemis program is a prime example of how technological partnerships can enhance the defense capabilities of both nations. Ukrainian drones, already battle-tested in real-world combat conditions, have the potential to become a vital component of the American defense strategy. This project also underscores that, despite political challenges, Ukraine remains a reliable and innovative partner for the US in the realm of defense.
