NUNC Capital Ignites €20M Venture Fund for Ukrainian Defense Tech Startups

In a significant move bridging European capital with Ukrainian ingenuity, Dutch venture capital firm NUNC Capital has officially launched a €20 million fund targeting Ukraine’s burgeoning defense technology sector.

The initiative, announced on NUNC Capital’s website, aims to establish a “strategic bridge between European defense markets and Ukraine’s innovative defense tech ecosystem”. This isn’t just about funding; NUNC Capital plans to set up a forward operating base within Ukraine, embedding itself locally to discover, invest in, and accelerate startups developing breakthrough defense solutions.

The decision to expand into Ukraine’s defense sector was driven by “recent geopolitical events on the world stage”, according to NUNC Capital CEO Bram Oostvogels. He emphasized a dual objective: “We intend to address critical gaps in Europe’s defense capabilities while leveraging Ukraine’s accelerated battlefield innovation”.

Oostvogels further noted that this strategy aligns perfectly with recent European calls to “mobilize private finance and better utilize existing financial instruments” to bolster the continent’s defense posture.

Targeting Key Innovation Areas

The fund will concentrate its investments in specific high-impact domains where NUNC Capital believes European strategic independence needs reinforcement and can directly benefit from Ukraine’s hard-won operational expertise. The key focus areas include:

  • Electronic Warfare (EW) & Signals Intelligence (SIGINT): Technologies crucial for dominating the electromagnetic spectrum.
  • Unmanned Systems: Advanced drones and robotic platforms.
  • Smart Materials: Next-generation materials offering enhanced protection or performance.
  • Sensors & Payloads: Cutting-edge detection and equipment capabilities.
  • GPS-Denied Communication & Navigation: Ensuring operational continuity when satellite navigation is unavailable.

Who is NUNC Capital?

NUNC Capital is not a newcomer to the defense investment landscape. Since 2013, the VC firm has cultivated a niche portfolio backing companies in critical defense areas such as advanced materials, unmanned systems, strategic procurement, supply chain logistics, and mission-critical software.

Underscoring its commitment to fostering defense innovation, NUNC Capital is an active member of the Brave1 investor community – a Ukrainian initiative supporting defense tech – and partners with the expanding European Defense Tech network.

This €20 million fund signals strong confidence in Ukraine’s tech talent and its potential to contribute significantly to European security through cutting-edge defense solutions forged in real-world conditions.
