A new force is rising in the defense tech landscape. Trypillian, a UK-Ukrainian startup forged by military veterans with firsthand combat experience, has secured a significant $5 million seed investment. The funding comes directly from Brooks Newmark, a former UK Minister for Civil Society, who also steps in as the company’s Chairman. This injection of capital is set to fuel Trypillian’s mission: developing cutting-edge autonomous combat systems designed for deep-strike capabilities.

Born from the crucible of real-world conflict, including the intense battles for Bakhmut and Soledar, Trypillian was co-founded in 2024 by a team of Ukrainian and British veterans and military experts. Their focus? To create battle-tested technologies that not only amplify combat effectiveness on the front lines but critically, reduce risks for personnel. Beyond deep-strike systems, the startup is innovating in combat communication and other autonomous solutions.
At the helm as co-founder and CEO is Ivan Matveichenko, a Ukrainian veteran who served in the aforementioned hot zones and brings a robust tech background from his time at IBM. He’s joined by fellow Ukrainian veteran and PhD, Oleh Bondarenko, as Project Manager, who boasts extensive experience in research and leadership roles, including with the Kyiv Aviation Institute. Adding strategic firepower is Robert Seely, a seasoned strategist, military serviceman, and former UK Member of Parliament, who takes on the role of Head of Strategy. Seely is also known for his recent book, “The New Sum”, which analyzes Russia’s wider conflict against the West.
“Most of us have seen war firsthand”, stated CEO Ivan Matveichenko. “That’s why we united – to create technologies that protect Ukraine and save lives”.
The investor, Brooks Newmark, is a prominent figure with a diverse background encompassing business, angel investing, philanthropy, and politics. His decade in the House of Commons included serving as Minister for Civil Society. Before his political career, Newmark was a senior partner at Apollo Global Management. His commitment to Ukraine is also evident through his co-founding of “Angels for Ukraine” in 2022, an organization dedicated to evacuating women and children from conflict zones and delivering humanitarian aid. Newmark also chairs Aremca, a UK-Kazakh mining company focused on rare earth metals.
With offices in both London and Kyiv, Trypillian is strategically positioned to leverage expertise and insights from both nations. This $5 million boost and the strategic guidance of Newmark are set to accelerate the development and deployment of their life-saving, mission-enhancing technologies. The message is clear: innovation born from experience is leading the charge in modern defense.
