TAF Industries Unveils “Kolibri” Drone to Conquer Battlefield Comms and Electronic Warfare

In a significant move to bolster Ukraine’s technological sovereignty on the battlefield, defense-tech powerhouse TAF Industries has launched mass production of its new “Kolibri 13 FR1” aerial repeater system—a game-changer for maintaining communication in the harshest electronic warfare (EW) environments.

Maintaining a stable connection for FPV drones and ground units is one of the most critical challenges in modern warfare. With complex terrain and relentless enemy jamming, the link between operator and asset can be the difference between success and failure. TAF Industries, a major player in Ukraine’s defense ecosystem with a staggering production capacity of up to 80,000 drones per month, is tackling this problem head-on.

Enter the Kolibri 13 FR1. This isn’t just another drone; it’s a specialized aerial communications hub designed to hover above the battlefield, creating a reliable data bridge where none could exist before. It’s a robust, homegrown solution engineered to outmaneuver the challenges that have plagued forces relying on off-the-shelf commercial hardware.

The Homegrown Advantage

The company emphasizes that the Kolibri system is not only a tactical asset but also a strategic one. It’s a direct, superior alternative to solutions based on Chinese DJI products, which face increasing procurement restrictions and security vulnerabilities.

According to TAF Industries, the Kolibri 13 FR1 system delivers critical advantages:

  • Cost-Effective: It comes in at half the cost of a comparable setup using a DJI Matrice drone.
  • Turnkey Solution: The system is ready for deployment “out of the box,” dramatically cutting down on setup and integration time.
  • Rapid Training: Operators can be fully trained and mission-ready in just one day.
  • GPS-Independent Navigation: Featuring advanced optical stabilization, the Kolibri can hold its position and operate effectively even when GPS signals are jammed or unavailable.
  • 24/7 Operations: The drone is fully equipped for both day and night missions.

Key Specifications:

  • Operational Range: Up to 15 km
  • Maximum Altitude: 1,000 m
  • Flight Endurance: Up to 45 minutes

The complete tactical kit includes two Kolibri aircraft, a ground control station, a rugged transport case, and supplementary video antennas, providing a comprehensive solution for field units.

A Powerhouse of Innovation

The launch of the Kolibri 13 FR1 solidifies TAF Industries’ position as a cornerstone of Ukraine’s defense innovation. The company, which recently joined the National Association of Ukrainian Defense Industries (NAUDI), boasts a portfolio of over 30 battle-tested solutions.

Their arsenal includes the highly resilient “Last Mile” EW-resistant FPV drones, the “Babka” reconnaissance and strike UAV with a 75 km range, and the powerful “Kvazar” electronic warfare systems. This diverse product line demonstrates a holistic approach to the challenges of the modern battlefield.

While the Kolibri may not be the first Ukrainian-developed repeater drone, its mass production by a manufacturer with TAF’s scale is a pivotal development. It signals a move towards standardizing advanced, secure, and cost-effective domestic technology, ensuring that Ukraine’s defenders have the tools they need to maintain the upper hand.
