OCTOPUS Unveiled: The UK-Ukrainian “Shahed Hunter” Set to Form Europe’s “Drone Wall”

A new guardian is preparing to enter the skies. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has officially unveiled the OCTOPUS, a cutting-edge interceptor drone co-developed by Ukrainian and British engineers. This project, presented during the President’s official visit to the United Kingdom, is designed with one critical mission: to hunt and destroy Russian “Shahed” (Geran-2) attack drones.

The presentation marks a pivotal moment in the defense-tech collaboration between the two nations. Here’s the breakdown of this game-changing development.

A New Era of Joint Production

The OCTOPUS project is the first major initiative under a groundbreaking new military technology-sharing agreement between Ukraine and the UK.

The production plan is ambitious and multi-phased:

  • Initial Phase: The UK will begin manufacturing the OCTOPUS drones for extensive testing in Ukrainian operational conditions.
  • Scaling Up: Following successful trials, the British side is prepared to scale the initiative significantly.
  • Mass Production: Serial production is being explored for facilities in both the UK and Ukraine. This dual-pronged approach aims to secure a stable and rapid supply chain for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, targeting a massive output of approximately 2,000 interceptors per month.

The “Drone Wall” Concept

The strategic vision for OCTOPUS extends far beyond Ukraine’s immediate battlefield needs. According to UK Secretary of State for Defence, John Healey, the OCTOPUS drones will form the “foundation of the European ‘drone wall'”.

This ambitious system is intended to be deployed along the borders of NATO allies, creating a high-tech shield to deter and intercept Russian drones attempting to enter allied airspace. In the long term, OCTOPUS is envisioned as a key defensive asset for protecting critical military and civilian infrastructure not only in Ukraine but also in the UK and other NATO member states.

A Deepening Alliance

This collaboration is just the beginning. Luke Pollard, UK Minister for Defence Industry, confirmed that the two nations are already planning other joint defense projects. Notably, the co-production of advanced gliding bombs is also under discussion, signaling a new, deeper, and more integrated chapter in the UK-Ukraine defense-tech alliance.
