In a move that cements Ukraine’s role as a global hub for defense technology, the Alliance and the Ukrainian government have announced UNITE – Brave NATO. This groundbreaking initiative aims to accelerate the deployment of defense innovations where they are needed most—on the battlefield.

Scheduled to launch in early 2026, this program represents a fusion of NATO’s strategic scale and Ukraine’s agile combat experience.

The Financials: A Joint Commitment

The pilot competition will kick off with a total budget of €10 million. The funding structure reflects a true partnership of equals:

  • NATO: Provides financing through the Comprehensive Assistance Package (CAP) for Ukraine.

  • Ukraine: The Ministry of Digital Transformation allocates a matching sum.

  • Execution: The project will be implemented on the Ukrainian side by the Brave1 cluster.

“We truly appreciate that NATO is fostering this fundamentally new partnership with Ukraine in the field of innovation. This cooperation will accelerate the development of advanced defense technologies and enhance interoperability. Together, we are building a more resilient, adaptive, and technologically advanced defense architecture for the entire Euro-Atlantic community”.

Mykhailo Fedorov, Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine.

Priority Tech Stacks

UNITE – Brave NATO isn’t just about funding; it is about solving specific, critical problems. Grants will be targeted at four key technology vectors essential for modern warfare:

  • Counter-UAS Systems (c-UAS): Defense against enemy drones.

  • SIGINT Systems: Signals intelligence and radio interception.

  • Navigation in EW Conditions: Solutions for positioning when GPS is jammed.

  • Ground Robotic Complexes: Unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs).

A “Win-Win” Architecture

The program is designed to create a feedback loop between Ukrainian innovators and the Alliance. While Ukraine gains resources to scale tech, NATO gains unprecedented access to combat-proven R&D.

“UNITE – Brave NATO will be a win-win initiative for NATO and Ukraine, within which innovators from both sides will work together to solve urgent battlefield challenges, providing the Alliance with unique learning in real-time”.

Radmila Shekerinska, NATO Deputy Secretary General.

Roadmap: What’s Next?

The timeline for the initiative is set, with significant scaling planned upon the success of the pilot.

  • February 2026: Expected start of application submissions.

  • Spring 2026: Announcement of the first winners at the second Ukraine-NATO Defense Innovators Forum.

  • Future Outlook: Following a successful pilot, NATO and Ukraine plan to scale the funding up to €50 million.

More detailed information regarding the next stages of the initiative will be released in 2026.
