In a significant move to strengthen national security and foster technological autonomy, the Brave1 defense technology cluster, in partnership with the European Union and the Better Regulation Delivery Office (BRDO), has announced the launch of the “EU4UA Defence Tech” grant program.

The initiative represents a deepening of cooperation between Ukraine and the European Union, specifically targeting the acceleration of advanced solutions to protect Ukrainian airspace from Russian aerial threats. The program underscores not only the steadfast support of European partners but also the resilience and adaptability of Ukraine’s defense-tech ecosystem in the face of ongoing wartime challenges.
Prioritizing Technological Autonomy
The primary focus of the program’s first stage is the “Protection of the Sky”. As aerial attacks involving drones and missiles remain a critical threat, the demand for localized, high-tech interception and detection systems has never been higher.
Mykhailo Fedorov, First Vice Prime Minister — Minister of Digital Transformation, emphasized that this initiative is about building long-term capabilities within Ukraine.
“Protecting the sky from Russian drones is a priority not only for Ukraine but for all of Europe”, Fedorov stated. “Thanks to the EU4UA Defence Tech program, we will be able to ensure the appearance on the market of products capable of significantly strengthening Ukraine’s defense capability and technological autonomy”.
Technical Requirements and Funding Opportunities
The program is designed to support mature projects that are ready to bridge the gap between prototype and mass production. Brave1 is specifically seeking teams developing:
-
High-speed interceptors: Solutions capable of reaching speeds exceeding 450 km/h.
-
Radar systems: Advanced tools for the detection and tracking of aerial targets.
To match the urgency and complexity of these developments, the grant ceiling has been raised significantly. Selected teams can receive up to €150,000—double the amount provided by standard Brave1 grant tracks. These funds are allocated for crucial development stages, including technology validation, prototype refinement, and rigorous testing.
Eligible applicants include companies with solutions at Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 5–6.
A Strategic Partnership for European Security
The “EU4UA Defence Tech” project, financed by the European Union and implemented by BRDO in partnership with Brave1, is scheduled to run from September 2025 through February 2027. This collaboration highlights a shared understanding that Ukraine’s defense is integral to the broader security architecture of Europe.
Katarina Mathernova, Ambassador of the European Union to Ukraine, highlighted the mutual importance of this cooperation.
“EU4UA Defence Tech is an important initiative of the European Union dedicated to Ukrainian defense innovations,” Mathernova remarked. “When Ukraine protects its sky, it protects its people — and the EU stands by Ukraine as it withstands relentless air attacks. Supporting this work is both a commitment to Ukraine’s survival and the security of all of Europe”.
Roadmap and Selection Process
The application window for the first wave of grants opened on December 1 and will remain open until January 14, 2026.
The selection process aims to be rigorous and transparent, consisting of three key stages:
-
Compliance Check: An initial review of documentation and eligibility.
-
Defense Expertise: A technical assessment of the solution’s viability and relevance.
-
Final Pitch: A presentation before a specialized commission.
The evaluation committee will be composed of representatives from Brave1, BRDO, the EU Defence Innovation Office in Kyiv, the Ministry of Defence, the General Staff, and independent observers.
Future Outlook
This initial grant round is part of a larger strategy to integrate Ukrainian innovation with European standards. The project plans to hold two additional grant rounds in 2026, with themes adapted to meet the evolving challenges on the frontline. Furthermore, the initiative includes provisions for regulatory support, a specialized hackathon, and the opening of a Brave1 Expo Room to showcase Ukrainian defense achievements.
Through initiatives like EU4UA Defence Tech, the Ukrainian technology sector continues to demonstrate that it is not merely surviving the war but is actively evolving into a powerhouse of defense innovation, supported by the united resources of the European community.
