Defense Tech Unicorn STARK Launches Massive R&D Hub in Ukraine: From Battlefield Data to Design in Days

Just ahead of the Munich Security Conference, Europe’s fastest-growing defense technology company, STARK, has announced a major expansion of its footprint in Ukraine. The new R&D hub promises to bridge the gap between frontline realities and high-tech engineering.

STARK, valued at over €1 billion, is setting a new pace in the defense sector. By establishing a dedicated site in Ukraine, the company aims to close the feedback loop between operators and engineers, ensuring that European defense tech evolves as fast as the threats on the battlefield.

The Hub: Scale and Focus

The new Ukrainian facility is designed to be a powerhouse of innovation and support.

  • Scale: A dedicated 2,000 square meter site.

  • Talent: Designed to support over 200 specialists.

  • Mission: Research and development, integration, training, and technical support.

The hub is not just about presence; it is about speed. Its primary operational goal is to significantly reduce the time required to move systems from the design phase into mass production.

The STARK Ecosystem: Multi-Domain Dominance

STARK’s expansion brings a sophisticated suite of “hunter-killer” technologies to the table, all united by a single software core designed for modern, high-intensity warfare.

An AI-generated concept developed in collaboration with TechUkraine, based on official STARK photo assets.

At the heart of the system is Minerva, an advanced AI-driven C2 (Command and Control) software. Minerva acts as the neural network for distributed operations, enabling swarms of drones to function effectively even in GNSS-denied environments where traditional communications fail.

This software powers a diverse hardware lineup:

  • Virtus (Air): A VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) loitering munition that requires no catapults or heavy launchers. With a range of 120 km and a 60-minute endurance, it delivers a 5 kg payload with high precision. It integrates formidable firepower, including German-made TDW Lion Strike warheads (capable of penetrating 800mm of armor) and Ukrainian warheads from Rendrock.

  • Vanta (Sea): An Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) designed for maritime reconnaissance and strike missions. Recently tested at NATO’s REPMUS exercises, Vanta can carry tube-launched loitering munitions, effectively turning it into a floating launchpad for extended reach.

High-Speed Iteration: The “Battlefield-to-Lab” Loop

STARK specializes in next-gen unmanned systems, including the Virtus loitering munitions. The key advantage of the new Ukrainian hub is the ability to conduct daily technology iterations based on real operational data.

By analyzing feedback from military operators in real-time, STARK can update and refine its UAV systems to ensure they remain aligned with frontline requirements. This approach drastically shortens development cycles—a critical factor in modern warfare where adaptability is everything.

“Russia’s war against Ukraine has fundamentally reshaped Europe’s security landscape. Russia has reorganised its defence industry for wartime needs, and this conflict has demonstrated that deterrence now depends not only on military capability, but also on the ability to sustain stable production”, says Maksym Cherkis, COO of STARK Ukraine.

A Pan-European Defense Architecture

STARK view Ukraine not merely as a market, but as a partner in shaping the new European security architecture. The company plans to expand further, moving from R&D to full-cycle UAV manufacturing within the country.

Simultaneously, STARK is strengthening its continental reach by opening a new office in Greece, reinforcing its status as a pan-European manufacturer with operations now spanning Germany, Sweden, the UK, Ukraine, and Greece.

“STARK is becoming a key pillar and partner in the defence of Europe, developing local defence-tech R&D and production across the continent. By leveraging innovation from the frontline and across Europe, we are helping ensure that proven systems can be produced at speed and kept relevant as operational needs evolve”, states Uwe Horstmann, CEO of STARK.
