The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has announced the start of licensed production of modern FPV drones at one of its state-owned enterprises. This initiative, launched in December as part of a pilot project, is a trilateral agreement with a private developer who provided the license for drone production.

“This experience has been positive,” said Lieutenant General Ivan Havryliuk, First Deputy Minister of Defense. “By integrating the state into the production chains, we have gained a clear understanding of the cost of drone production and our competitive advantages in this market.”
This move is expected to increase the quality of finished products through sustainable competition and allow the state enterprise to independently participate in tenders from the Defense Procurement Agency and other potential customers.
The Ministry of Defense emphasizes that the produced drones will be supplied to the units of the Defense Forces of Ukraine.
Experts from the Main Directorate of Defense Innovations of the Ministry of Defense have also developed a roadmap for organizing similar production facilities with other drone developers. This will significantly increase production capacity for scaling drone output.
In January, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov announced the monthly allocation of 2.5 billion hryvnias among the brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for the purchase of drones. This funding empowers unit commanders to acquire the drones most effective for their frontline tasks.
The mass use of FPV drones in combat between Ukrainian and Russian forces has drastically changed the landscape of modern warfare. The successful deployment of one or more inexpensive drones can destroy military equipment worth millions of dollars.
Key takeaways:
- Domestic Production: Ukraine is now producing FPV drones domestically, reducing reliance on external suppliers.
- Cost-Effectiveness: Local production provides a clearer understanding of costs and competitive advantages.
- Increased Production: The initiative aims to significantly scale drone production capacity.
- Empowering Frontline Units: Funding is allocated directly to brigades for drone procurement, giving them flexibility and responsiveness.
This strategic move by the Ministry of Defense underscores the crucial role of FPV drones in modern warfare and Ukraine’s commitment to strengthening its defense capabilities through technological innovation and self-reliance.
