KYIV, UKRAINE – June 4, 2025 – The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has pulled back the curtain on its audacious “Operation Pavutyna” (Spiderweb), releasing compelling video evidence of devastating strikes that have crippled Russian strategic aviation capabilities. In a significant update to what is being hailed as a masterstroke of modern warfare, the SBU confirmed that 41 Russian military aircraft were targeted in this meticulously executed special operation.
The agency revealed that the operation, personally overseen by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and executed under the leadership of SBU Head Vasyl Malyuk, has left a deep scar on Russia’s ability to project air power. Many of the targeted aircraft are believed to be irretrievably destroyed, while others face years of extensive repairs. The estimated financial blow to Russia’s war machine from this single operation is pegged at a staggering over $7 billion USD.
Tech-Driven Precision: AI and FPV Drones Spearhead the Attack
The newly released footage graphically illustrates the precision of Ukrainian FPV (First-Person View) drones as they zeroed in on high-value assets across four key Russian airbases: “Olenya”, “Ivanovo”, “Dyagilevo” and “Belaya”. These airfields have been crucial launchpads for Russia’s strategic bombers, which have been relentlessly used to attack Ukrainian cities.
Among the confirmed targets hit are some of Russia’s most formidable aerial assets, including:
- A-50 (AEW&C aircraft)
- Tu-95 (Strategic bomber)
- Tu-22 (Long-range strategic bomber)
- Tu-160 (Supersonic strategic bomber)
- An-12 (Transport aircraft)
- Il-78 (Aerial refueling tanker)
This operation wasn’t just about courage; it was a showcase of Ukraine’s rapidly advancing technological prowess. The SBU highlighted the use of sophisticated UAV control technology, which ingeniously blended autonomous AI algorithms with the skilled intervention of human operators. In a remarkable display of adaptive technology, some drones, upon losing signal, seamlessly transitioned to AI-guided mission execution based on pre-planned routes. The final devastating blow was delivered as the drones’ combat systems automatically detonated upon nearing their designated targets.
This innovative approach, reportedly involving AI trained on unconventional targets like museum-piece aircraft, allowed for deep penetration and precision strikes far from Ukrainian borders, reaching targets like “Olenya” nearly 1800km away and “Belaya” an astonishing 4400km into Russian territory.
A Strategic Setback for the Kremlin
The impact of “Operation Pavutyna” extends beyond the immediate destruction. The loss of these strategic aircraft, particularly types no longer in active production, significantly degrades Russia’s long-range strike capabilities. This daring SBU initiative not only disrupts current Russian military operations but also sends a clear message about Ukraine’s evolving capacity to counter aggression through technological superiority and bold tactical execution.
As TechUkraine continues to follow developments, “Operation Pavutyna” stands as a testament to Ukraine’s innovative spirit and its unyielding resolve to defend its sovereignty using every tool at its disposal, on the ground and in the digital ether.
